Volunteer Psychological Therapist Adult (Arsenal Project)

Location: London, Finsbury Park
Salary: This post is voluntary (unpaid) however we are able to reimburse lunch and reasonable travel expenses within London.
Job Ref: VA231

Freedom from Torture is the only organisation in the UK dedicated solely to the treatment of survivors of torture.

Torturers attempt to silence and break people. We help survivors to find their voices again and rebuild their lives in the safety of the UK.

Our team of dedicated professionals provide direct support to survivors including psychological therapy, physical health services, legal and welfare support, and expert medical reports for use in survivors' asylum claims. We also support other providers to deliver high quality rehabilitation services to survivors.

We campaign for national and global change, using evidence from our services and survivor voices to protect and promote survivors' rights and hold torturing states to account. We are proud to play a significant role in the global anti-torture movement. Survivors, active and empowered, are at the centre of all of our work.

None of this can happen without our vibrant community of supporters who help to create this change.

Thanks to the dedication of our staff and volunteers – as well as thousands of passionate supporters and funders – thousands of torture survivors have been able to rebuild their lives in incredibly difficult circumstances.

We are currently recruiting for a volunteer Psychological Therapist (Adult) to offer therapeutic input to the football project run with Arsenal in the Community for torture survivors, to coordinate this project, and offer a small amount of either group or individual therapy with torture survivors in addition to this. The volunteer will need to be able to work on Monday afternoons for the football project and an additional half day minimum, on any day.
There are opportunities within Freedom from Torture to undertake additional roles such as representing the volunteers at appropriate forums and participating in our training programme to build capacity for work with torture survivors in other agencies.
This role is an excellent opportunity for someone who wishes to build their skills in working with people who have experienced complex trauma, and who would like to gain experience of working in a human rights context.

The purpose of the role is primarily to offer psychological support to the members of the football project, attending weekly football sessions on Monday afternoons at Arsenal Hub, and work alongside the Arsenal staff to coordinate the project. In addition, there will be the opportunity to hold a small caseload (2-4 clients) of adult survivors of torture or co-facilitate one of our therapy groups.

The ideal candidate for the role will have experience of working with refugees and asylum seekers in a therapeutic capacity, will know how to work with adults who have experienced complex trauma and will be committed to the human rights context of Freedom from Torture. It is not necessary to have knowledge or skills of football.
