Survivor Activism Volunteer

Contract: Volunteer
Duration: 6 months
Location: London
Salary:  Unpaid (we can contribute towards reasonable travel and lunch expenses)
Job Ref: VA216

Freedom from Torture is the only organisation in the UK dedicated solely to the treatment of survivors of torture.

Torturers attempt to silence and break people. We help survivors to find their voices again and rebuild their lives in the safety of the UK.

Our team of dedicated professionals provide direct support to survivors including psychological therapy, physical health services, legal and welfare support, and expert medical reports for use in survivors' asylum claims. We also support other providers to deliver high quality rehabilitation services to survivors.

We campaign for national and global change, using evidence from our services and survivor voices to protect and promote survivors' rights and hold torturing states to account. We are proud to play a significant role in the global anti-torture movement. Survivors, active and empowered, are at the centre of all of our work.

None of this can happen without our vibrant community of supporters who help to create this change.

Thanks to the dedication of our staff and volunteers – as well as thousands of passionate supporters and funders – thousands of torture survivors have been able to rebuild their lives in incredibly difficult circumstances.

Volunteer roles in Freedom from Torture’s Survivor Activism team are for people with a background in human rights or refugee protection. Interested applicants should be keen to gain more experience in working with survivors of torture for activism purposes to support future roles in similar non-governmental organisations.

It is an ideal opportunity to learn more about how a UK based human rights NGO develops and delivers survivor centred and survivor-led activism for outreach, influencing and capacity building purposes.

The Survivor Activism Volunteer will work alongside the Head of Research and Survivor Activism, Survivor Activism Coordinators, Administrators and other Policy & Advocacy staff to support the delivery of survivor activism aims and objectives at Freedom from Torture.

We are looking for a passionate and enthusiastic volunteer to be part of our charity, helping to support our survivor activism team. Your role will be varied, writing blogs and articles for the website, carrying out research in support of survivor activism opportunities, and providing administrative and logistics support.

If you would like to work in a survivor activism team, make a difference to the lives of survivors of torture and with interest and concern for human rights and refugee protection we would love to hear from you!
